Editorial – Summer 2026

Like summer itself, this issue of What’s Cooking comes with plenty of heat, colour and flavour. We take a fascinating look at the enduring relationship between the Livery companies and the City of London — and why that history still matters today — brought vividly into focus through the lens of acclaimed photographer Niki Gorick.

There is plenty to celebrate too, as we catch up on the results of a packed season of competitions, from FutureChef and the SCOTY Chef of the Year Competition to the Apprentice of the Year Award and Ex-Army Sustainer. At Bedford College, the British Culinary Championships created a real buzz, with an impressive range of classes and talent on show.

Features on CRUMBS and Treloar’s highlight the continuing impact of The Cooks Charity, while new research at City St George’s, University of London is set to bring fresh thinking to chef training, qualifications and the wider skills pipeline.

Taken together, these stories show just how broad, lively and worthwhile the Livery’s work continues to be. They are also a timely reminder that there are many ways for members to get involved — whether by sharing time, offering talent or supporting the work through philanthropic giving. So, pour something cool, find a sunny spot and enjoy this summer serving of What’s Cooking.
